This painting was inspired by the hydrangeas in my own garden. The hydrangeas live under a pine tree and receive lots of pine needles throughout the year. Shortly after a heavy storm my hydrangeas burst into color. The color was a vibrant intense blue that I had not seen before. I wanted to capture the beauty of the shrub, the intensity of the color, and the graceful nature of the plant. I took a loose approach to the painting by using oil, cold wax, using mostly spatulas and scrappers.
