I was painting at the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. In the early morning I went out to paint Lipan Point. Morning is also the best time to catch the parks wildlife in action. My favorite is the big horn sheep. They are more rare to spy than the deer and bison of the Canyon.
Everything was standard looking as I started setting up to paint. Then, it was stunning. It was sunrise and the clouds had descended into the canyon revealing only bits and pieces. For a moment I was in painting heaven. But like all good things, it passed, and turned to a solid white clouds. This painting is based off that sketch of the one good moment before it all disappeared. The big horn sheep add to the dream like feeling of the painting. the canyon is full of life.
